u have to become a registered nurse, and then you will need to do a specialist course and then assuming there is an opening in the surgical ward, will u be able to assist. But thats the same for any specialist nursing like mid-wifery. Anyway the career ur looking at is called a theate nurse. Either way u still have to do the RN first

I don’t know where you are, but in Florida it takes awhile to get all the prerequisites for the nursing programs, and the programs are limited access, which means that people who have the highest GPA and the most prerequisites/co-requisites get in first. If you can, do a dual enrollment. You can take alot of the college prerequisite courses and get credit for them, while still in high school, which means they’ll be out of the way before you even start college and increase your chances of getting in right away, and save you about 2 years of prerequisite courses after high school.

Question by Rachael A: Finding out about nursing jobs?
I’ve been curious lately and I’ve wanted first hand experience because the internet can only give you so much.. do you work as a nurse? What kind of nurse do you work as? How much schooling did it take and do you like it
I know there is a kind of nurse for every letter of the alphabet, but is there just a general nurse? If so, what exactly does that entail?

I am a clinical nurse specialist, which is a subtype of advance practice nurse like a nurse practitioner. I work in a cardiology setting. It took me 6 years of college total to complete my MSN, but I had a break in schooling after I finished my BSN for about 6 years. Before I became a CNS, I was what you consider to be a generalist. I worked mainly in Med-Surg, Telemetry, Oncology, and Peds- all inpatient. Med-Surg is about as general as it gets, and the job can be very hectic. Once you get experience there, you can branch into other areas with less stress. As a med-surg nurse I typically carried a group of 5 or 6 patients through a 12 hr shift, dispensing their rmeds, doing procedures like blood draws, IV starts, and dressing changes, as well as getting them to all of their appointments within the hospital. After working Med Surg for 2 years I was given the option of moving to the ER or the ICU. I went to the ER. The ER was crazy busy, and I felt there was not enough time to properly educate the patients for discharge. Hope this helps!

Question by Jbaby: advice about nursing and college?
im about to graduate highschool and im trying to decide what my options are for becoming an RN. my original plan was to go to a community college get my associates degree in nursing and transfer to a four year university with a RN-BSN program. the problem im having with that is that the community college nursing program is extremely competitive and im worried about not making it into the program
a new option i was researching was going to community college and finishing my pre-reqs and transferring to a four year, but i was wondering if i have to wait two years to transfer or if i can transfer when im ready and if it limits my options to what college i want to go to ?
im just not sure what option is a better choice.

you’ll find a job no matter which one you choose, but i would recommend a 4-year college. if you have a BSN RN you will have more opportunities to move up in nursing such as management opportunities. more hospitals are looking for 4-year degree nurses over 2-year degree nurses for that reason.
