Nursing: RN or PN? College course questions…?

Question by Catalina: Nursing: RN or PN? College course questions…?
I’m looking in to colleges. I want to be a registered nurse. The college close to me offers three programs:

Pre-Nursing Certificate- to become a CNA
Diploma in Applied Science: Major in Nursing (Pn)
Associate in Health Science: Major in Nursing (RN)

Any nurses out there that can tell me what they did in college? I’m not sure I understand… The program descriptions says an Associate in Health Science: Major in Nursing would prepare students to take the exam for an RN.

Would I have to get anything like a Pre-Nursing Certificate before I get an associate? And what is a PN? Is a diploma better than an associates? Just confused…

Questions are:

Do I have to take all three programs or just one?
After finishing the program for an Associate in Applied Science, do I have to then take an exam to be a RN?
And if any RNs could give me insight into how the college courses and programs work and the job itself…

This is the site I’m looking at.

If you want to be an RN then you go for the Associate in Health Science degree. And when you are finished, you wlll take a test with your classmates called the state board exam which will certify you to be a registered nurse.

A PN is a Practical Nurse, which in my state is a LPN, a Licensed Practical Nurse, and is a degree which not as long as an RN degree. Those who finish the PN program have to take a state exam, too, to become certified as practical nurses.

The PN program is usually a year and the RN program is usually 2 years, not including pre-requisites. Every college is different in how they set up their programs but it’s not uncommon to have the RN program be a continuation of the PN program.

If you were to go to a university you would get a BSN, which is a Bachelor of Science of Nursing degree and then take the state board exam to be certified as a registered nurse (RN).

I hope this answers your questions.

Well, if you don’t know why you want to pursue nursing, then I’m at a loss :)

Okay, okay….talk about what part of nursing is interesting to you. Do you want to help take care of people when they are at their most vulnerable? Is it because you or a family member went through serious illness and you were inspired by the nurses who helped care for you? Just don’t say you’re in it for the money :)
