I’m a freshman in college, trying to swich to nursing major. I have applied but have been told to apply to?

Question by Ana: I’m a freshman in college, trying to swich to nursing major. I have applied but have been told to apply to?
have been told to apply to other schools because it is very competitive. Some schools want you to have all your prerequisites yet others you get accepted into the nursing program and then start taking classes. I just don’t understand how this works. Can anyone explain this to me?

Hi Ana,

It is basically there is a high demand for nursing degree by students but universities are not able to recruit the needed professors to teach the subject. A part of this has to do with the fact a nurse with a PhD or even a MSN can make much more working in the field then they could teaching. So, for universities to address the shortage issue, at especially the BSN level, they put requirements such as GPAs to limit the number of potential applicants in order to have a class size that they can manage. In addition nursing is heavily dependent on science, particularly biology and organic chemistry. Without being competent in the sciences a student will struggle with understanding the subject. Therefore the answer to your question comes down to how successful the university is attracting staff and how they feel the best way is to teach nursing.

If UK offers a pre-profession track for pre-nursing then you can declare that as a major when you get accepted into the university. If they do not offer the pre-professional track, then you will need to declare an actual major related to nursing (biology, chemistry, public health, etc) and just make sure that you meet all of the class requirements that are needed for the nursing program. Many degrees will meet the requirements or come very close. You may want to pick a specific major anyway though, in case you change your mind about nursing, then you will still have credits for a specific degree.

Im going to be a freshman in college this fall as a nursing major, and what should i be expecting?

Question by sparks: Im going to be a freshman in college this fall as a nursing major, and what should i be expecting?
I’m planning to go into psychiatric nursing if I make it into nursing school, but I just need more information on how nursing school works. I also heard that you have to go through two years as a nursing major before you can take the test to get into nursing school. Is it hard?

It depends on the school that you are going to and the program you are entering. I am presently a senior nursing student in a 4 year (BSN program). I was entered right into the nursing school after high school, and I chose THAT school for that reason. Look into your options and research about nursing schools and their programs. With my school, there are no competitions or wait lists (which often occurs with schools that want the best students, and may not be able to advance a large number of students at one time. Clinical spots are hard to arrange and cannot have large numbers.) Some schools will have you take the general prerequisites (your sciences, your writing courses, etc). My school, however, allowed me to take all my pre-req.classes and electives and they had to be completed before starting clinical rotations. With my school, I was entered into the school as a freshmen, began taking nursing courses and was able to start clinical/be prepared in my Junior on track. Again, it just depends on your school and what program. I am not too sure how the process works with getting into THE nursing school (test wise, grade wise, etc.), but I do know that with my school we are constantly taking NCLEX style tests and there are EXIT exams in my school order to graduate and then go on to take the NCLEX. Be expected to work hard and study hard. Know that it will get tough, but learn how to study and do what is best for you! In my program, you cannot get less than a C in any course. It is difficult, but just remember to breathe and believe in yourself. Good Luck!

you can talk to your college counsler and ask if there is an intership you can take on at a local hospital. Or you can call the hospitals in your area and ask if there are jobs, internships or anything you can get going for yourself before you start college.

These are long shots. Usually they offer these kinds of programs to you when you have a couple years of college under your belt. Or equivilent in a private program for nurses.

Best wishes and good luck to you and bright future always.

Some hospitals do offer office type jobs or simple nurse jobs, (Like running back and forth grabbing supplies for doctors and stuff.) That is a great way to break into your career and give yourself a hands-up!

Are you allowed to declare nursing as your major in your freshman year of college?

Question by confuuused: Are you allowed to declare nursing as your major in your freshman year of college?
I really want to major in nursing. So in my freshman year of college, I want to declare nursing as my major. I was just wondering if it is allowed to declare your major in your freshman year of college. If not, are there prerequisites to be met before majoring in nursing?

Best answer:

Answer by hula wabbit
Sometimes you can declare Nursing as your major during your freshman year. It really depends on what the admission requirements are to be admitted to the Nursing program.

This is how it normally works, when you apply for admission, you apply for a specific degree program (major). If you meet the admission requirements are and admitted, you will be admitted into the degree program of your choice thus majoring in a particular program. So, if you apply for the Nursing program and you are admitted, your major will be considered to be Nursing.

Keep in mind that some schools may not admit freshman straight into the Nursing program. They may require prerequisites prior to your admittance. It’s best to contact the school you are interested in attending since admission requirements can vary from school to school.

Best wishes!

Can a freshman in highschool take a side nursing course from a college or something ?

Question by Kellie: Can a freshman in highschool take a side nursing course from a college or something ?
Im 14 years old, and I am about to start my freshman year in highschool. I really want to become a nurse and I have heard of nursing courses or programs in highschool but I don’t understand them. I know that you can train to become an EMT when your 16 but I was wondering if you can start taking classes or courses early, or even volunteer work. Also does this look good on my college application or my future reseme ? Thanks !

In California at least, you need to be 18 to certify as an EMT. But the more you can do ahead of time the better. Go to your nearest Red Cross Chapter and get certified in CPR/First Aid. If you want to get started in the healthcare field, you could go try to become a lifeguard, or go to your school’s athletic trainer and ask if you can shadow him or help out. There are a lot of opportunities out there if you look. But first, go get certified in CPR/First Aid (both). The Red Cross usually offers a class that will certify you in both at the same time.
