Question by flying traveler: Nursing jobs at prisons?
I want to get a nursing degree and work as a nurse at a prison. Should I get a MENTAL HEALTH NURSING degree or should I get a ‘REGULAR’ NURSING degree? Personally I’d prefer to get the mental health one but I’m worried that there aren’t a lot of job opportunities at prisons for mental health nurses….so would it be much much easier for me to get a job at a prison as a ‘regular’ nurse?

Answer by Just Me
To work as a nurse in prison, you need to have qualified as a registered nurse and preferably be registered in adult, mental health or learning disabilities.
Hope this helps.

Question by HMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm: Will an Other than Honorable discharge for Marijuana, stop you from getting a job as a nurse?
Is there anything that could make the discharge not seem so bad example like attending drug classes, please no negative comments.

Yes, absolutely. They background check you extensively in nursing. However, no worries..it’s a stupid field to get into anyway. Pay is horrible, no jobs, africans/jamaicans come here and steal the jobs for dirt cheap prices…and it’s the most abusive field EVER.

You can be a psych nurse! There is a whole specialty for it. All you need to start working in a psych facility is your RN license and a facility willing to train you – which usually isn’t hard to find. Psych isn’t among the more popular fields in nursing. You can go on to earn a master’s degree which specializes in psych, such as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry.
You could go for a double major or major in nursing and minor in psych and it would be great knowledge for you, but it’s not required or anything.
Good luck!

Question by Faye: Why did my nurse refuse to give me my injection?
I have been booked in to visit the nurse for two week now to have my HEP B jab. I had rang up to tell them this a week prior to my appointment and they said it was fine. I really needed this injection for my job! The nurse has turned around and said I am not allowed to give you this injection!!!!!!!!
I then rang up other doctors in my area and they all said ‘yes you are allowed…’
I AM MAD. :@

Are you sure they were a registered nurse (certified RN) and not a medical assistant? It is likely they were actually what is called a “medical assistant” and not a registered nurse or nurse practitioner.
They often wear the same scrubs as an RN and are often incorrectly referred to as nurses by people who see them and by staff who forget who specifically they are referring to. Medical assistants perform many of the more basic duties often assigned to nurses that do not require as much training or certification to perform – such as clerical tasks, repeating instructions to a patient that were given by a doctor, performing routine room prep tasks in between patients, and prepare and administer some therapies but often only while supervised.
In reference specifically to injections, a medical assistant can only provide them if ordered AND supervised by a doctor. The doctor does not have to literally be standing over them, but must be present in the office. If they are otherwise unavailable and certainly if they did not leave sufficiently specific instructions, a medical assistant is not legally allowed to administer that injection. This holds true even if the patient is established and already scheduled for a specific procedure – the doctor must be “present” and specifically order the medical assistant to perform the injection.
Some states have even stricter laws (Nevada) such that a medical assistant can be jailed for giving injections. Some states have or have attempted to pass laws allowing medical assistants to perform certain routine injections once properly trained; I’m not sure if any have passed but the doctor’s own insurance as well as he office/institution policy would likely still prohibit certain procedures as long as some state they operated in did.
But if that’s the case and they had only an MA who, for one reason or another, was not cleared or authorized to provide vaccinations – then the reason you didn’t get your shot was their HR person screwed up doing the schedule.

Question by Axl86: Nursing jobs with full sleeve tattoos?
I have full sleeve tattoos on both arms. I am a male that will be finishing nursing school and becoming an RN within the next 2 years. I plan on having to wear long sleeves under my scrubs or wearing a scrub jacket. That’s a given. I was wondering if there are any departments in which you can not wear long sleeves? I was thinking the OR might have some rules against long sleeves? thanks for any answers.

Answer by reginachick22
Long sleeves and nursing don’t mix. Unless you are doing a desk job, patient education, etc.
Think about what you will be doing as a nurse. Wiping dirty smelly bottoms, scrubbing up, touching bodily fluids, oozing wounds, etc. There’s a reason why scrubs only come to the elbow. I’m serious. If you wear sleeves, I am 99% sure the average nurse will just be rolling them up all day long (assuming you have the time as you run from patient to patient).
You will not be able to hide your tattoos for the most part. And it is highly unlikely that a new grad would be able to secure a desk job/non clinical job without any experience. You may want to consider psychiatric nursing, where for the most part, you just push pills all day long and monitor people. That said, you have few options:
-Attempt to remove your tattoos with laser removal, which can be painful, expensive, and ineffective.
-Attempt to get a job in psych, where the chance that you’ll have to change bedpans, wipe vomit, dress wounds, etc. is reduced.
-Show your tattoos and try not to worry about them. I have seen one or two nurses with tats on their forearms, and as long as your sleeves aren’t potentially offensive and obscene to your clients (I.e. Jenna Jameson…buck naked,or a huge swastika), I don’t think this is as big of a problem as one would think. It depends on the workplace. Some clients may not notice/care, others may like them and chat about tattoos with you, others may be offended have a hard time taking you seriously and in a professional light and may even ask for another nurse.
It’s the price you pay for having tats, I guess. It’s something that you must consider before you get one. It’s not a problem if you want to work at a bar or an ink parlour, but it may be one in a traditional setting. Like it or not, extreme tats and piercings can affect your employment, but then again, they may not. Fair or not, that’s just the way it is.
You really should contact the local hospitals and clinics that you will be potentially working at and ask them on their policy. If you find that having tats is causing issues with employment, consider removal, and if that doesn’t appeal to you, consider going into patient education, nursing research (data collecting, etc.), or another field.
Good luck!

Question by hi: what are other nursing jobs that just require high school diploma?ex, LPN,Phlebotomist?
I WORDED IT IT WRONG. I MEANT LIKE ALL YOU NEED IS A HIGH SCHOOL DEPLOMA TO GET ACCEPTED IN A TRAINING PROGRAMN.
Best answer:
Answer by thev_lestat
I believe you have to have training to be an LPN or Phlebotomist, I’ve known people who have gone to school for both. Maybe you could be a CNA, I don’t believe that requires college, but you would have to take a training course for it.

Best answer:
Answer by .
I just asked the PA I work for that question 2 days ago…Here is what he said
He said they make about the same salary..PA may be slighty higher pay, the difference is that a Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner works independently, while a Physician assistant works under the direction of the Doctor. PAs go through more schooling
