Most nurses have a RN at least and then they may work on a Pediatric floor in the hospital until an opening became available in OB. While in school, make every effort to get training in your area of interest, even if you have to work as an aide on the floor. If you impress the head nurse, you may get a job after graduation. The pay is good but not more than most floor nurses. If you want a better job, continue on in school and become a nurse-practitioner.

i have been to college to study childcare and education level 2. i have been working in a nursery for 8 months now but i have been working at level 3 standards, (even though im only level 2) i am now looking for a new job and also would like to do training in a new job for my level 3, ive searched online for nursery assistant jobs, but it keeps coming up with nursery nurse. Hi you really do need to do your level three to be considered fully qualified. I know this is a pain but I’m afraid new Government legislation has stated that by 2010 everyone who works with children unsupervised Must have a level 3.
I am a pre-school leader and I have to train to level 4 to keep my job, very unfair I know. Many people in my position are not training so goodness knows what will happen come 2010. Good Luck with your studies and remember you can study whilst you work.

You can become an RN with two years of college, but I would recommend obtaining your BSN (4 years). Most maternity units and labor and delivery units require their RNs to have a minimum amount of experience (anywhere from a year on up…sometimes having the BSN degree will get you in sooner).
The names most frequently used are Labor and Delivery Nurse, Mother/Baby, Maternity Nurse, OB nurse – they deal w/delivering of the newborns and the care of the mother,
NICU, Pediatric, and Nursery Nurses deal only w/the newborns.
To get into the Newborn area, the best bet is to go to a school that has 1 semester of OB and 1 semester of Pediatrics. At my school I was able to pick what area I wanted to do my practicum (we spend about 2.5 months working on a unit of our choice). I worked in a Level II NICU. It was the best experience of schooling. Unfortunately, out in the “real world”, NICU jobs are few and far between to come by. You have to work at a large hospital and limit yourself if you ever want to get out of pediatrics. I’m in my first job out of nursing school now and am working w/adults in postop orthopaedic surgery. it is okay, but I miss the newborns. A doctor once told me that working w/newborns is the most rewarding nursing avenue (and he doesn’t work w/newborns so he is not biased).
I feel like I overloaded you w/info. Good luck!

Question by starryeyedsurprise24: What do you have to do to become a nurse in the nursery at the hospitals?
I really want to become a nurse for the infants in the nursery. I want to know what you have to do to become one (meaning what type of schooling do I need, etc.) and what can I expect in terms of a salary? If you yourself are that specific nurse, do you like it?

You are talking about being an OB nurse. You need to go to college and get your ADN (associate’s in nursing) or BSN (Bachelor’s in Nursing). Then you will have to take a state board examination to get your license. OB nurse’s do much more than taking care of infants in the nursery, they help deliver babies, assess mom and child, and then plan, implement, and evaluate care. They work closely with MDs to care for the patients and are able to act and critically think on any problems that may happen.
Salary depends on your location, but as a new grad you can expect 20-25 dollars an hour. Most OB nurses love what they do, but it wasn’t for me when I was on my OB clinical rotation. Nursing school gives you an opportunity to work Med/Surg (generalized problems with adults) Psychiatric, Pediatric, and OB-which gives you a well rounded experience and lets you decide what area most interests you.
