Question by mlgpinkfox: Community College for Nursing or a University?
I am planning on attending college next fall (2009-2010). I have many choices either to attend a community college and receive a 2 year associates(ADN) at Delaware County Community College….or a 4 year(BSN) at a University such as West Chester, Penn State, or Widener. But these schools are too pricey for me and I do not want to get a huge debt after college. Every nurse in the area says Delaware County has a very strong nursing program- one of the best in Pennsylvannia. I have also heard that ADN’s get paid just the same as BSN’s do? Should I stick with the 2,000 a year education vs. the 10,000? My school frowns upon community college as being the bad thing, but am i just getting a (maybe)BETTER education for 1/4 of the money? Please help =)

I had the same dilemma as you when I was deciding between going to a university or to a community/junior college. I know that people usually look upon community colleges as lower/bad education but it’s not.
Some of the professors as CCs actually teach the same curriculum at a university. Also, if you are looking to eventually go on to a four year college, the associates doesn’t even really matter considering that now n’ days, everyone needs a bachelors or above.
I would say that you should go to a CC. From experience, it’s cheaper and it’s not true about getting not the same education. At times, it’s sometimes even better considering that students are more driven because they want the bang for the buck.
Besides, if people say that it’s a good and strong nursing program, I say go for it! It wouldn’t hurt to save a little money, now would it?

Question by Chef V: Nursing School National University or Kaplan College (San Diego)?
I was wondering if anyone out there had any opinions or experience with either National University or Kaplan college in regards to the Nursing program. I have a Bachelor is something completely different and would like to go into nursing. I’ve visited National and have an appointment with Kaplan tomorrow but would greatly appreciate advice on the subject. Thanks!

Kaplan will cost you a lot…why don’t you do your RN at a community College. It would be waaayy cheaper..But it looks like at National University they have the BSN only and you said you already have a BA. I wouldn’t go for another BA in nursing i would just get the AS RN. If you go to the Comm college then you can get your RN without having to get another BA..that will save you lots of time and money.
Let me know if you have any questions..I am an admissions adviser at a college.
PS: why in the world did i get a thumbs down?? I had the same answer as the person that recommended a community college below…..haters….

Question by tetanecessity: can a degree from university of phoenix online get me a travelling nurse job?
Best answer:
Answer by Judy
Much of nursing education involves clinical work, which is actually hands-on. How does U of Phoenix do this? If you get a nursing degree that doesn’t include clinical work, it’s not real likely that you’ll be able to get a job.

Question by Britain: Is Herzing University is a good college to go to for the Nursing Program in Orlando, FL.?
Ive heard different things about the school and just wondering if its even worth it! I dont want to waste my time then later on down the road I won’t beable to find a job!

To answer your question…
The program is very intensive and accelerated. It takes a lot of dedication and study (as with any nursing program) however, at Herzing since there is no wait list you can enroll at different times throughout the year. I fell that my education is actually above par all things considered. We consistently have a high pass rate on the NCLEX Exam (nursing boards required for license) and are in the process of having an even higher level of accredidation from the NLN. Herzing is a little more expensive than other schools in the area, but the classes are small and you don’t have to wait 2-4 years to be accepted. Hope that helps…if you like come to the school and tour the nursing department and ask all the questions you feel you need to ask to make an informed decision.

I’m in your same situation, except for Chiropractic School. What did was I asked an admissions advisor if they would accept community college credits and the answer was yes. And if you have a degree already that will be something they look at. Also, maybe see if you can get conditionally accepted with the credits you have now, that way you won’t have to worry about taking expensive classes at an university.

I would imagine to work as a nurse, you need to have graduated and passed the boards. Most hospitals do have options for student nurse externs that have completed at least one nursing class/clinical.
