Question by Corrine: What military jobs would women have held in Honolulu during the Pearl Harbor attack?
I’m researching, and would like to know if women would have held any military support jobs other than nurses (such as secretaries, pilots, etc…)? If so, did they belong to a special branch of the military, or would they have been hired as civilians. Specifically posts held BEFORE the breakout of war.

While I know during the war women did become pilots (though in the US they didn’t become combat pilots, though they did serve as ferry pilots and in at least one instance as test pilots of a sort), I’m not aware of any female military pilot in the US prior to Pearl.
Women would join as WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots), WACs (Women’s Army Corps), and WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) during the war. The last two came into existence in ’42 and the WASPs in ’43. However, the WASPs actually had been proposed in the summer of ’41 and had two predecessors which came into existence in ’42 which would be combined in ’43 to form the WASPs. These were the WFTD (Women’s Flying Training Detachment) and the WAFS (Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron).

Question by a lady: are women in the military that have jobs such as nurses and doctors respected?
are women in the military that have jobs such as nurses and doctors but don’t see combat (not referring to combat medics) treated with respect by the others?
i ask because this other girl asked about joining as a nurse and one of the answers (women by the way) even told her she shouldn’t join a “female stereotype” job and branch out
i was thinking about the navy corps when i graduate in two years from nursing

They are respected by most people. Women are in combat as are male soldiers as well. In todays modern age, women and men have the same rights.

Question by The Tall Man: Do you agree there are jobs not meant for women?
Fire fighting for instance, do you want your life depending on rather a 115 pound chick can carry you? Mining, construction and mechanic work. Stay away ladies. There’s plenty of nursing jobs and clerical work.

blanket statements are usually incorrect. I agree some jobs probably wouldn’t be best for women but I also think you shouldn’t completely write off an entire gender.

Well since their was high demand in production to support the war efforts women were being given the chance to work in factories and jobs that would be considered manly like working in railroads because businesses needed all the people they could get.
