Most hospitals don’t have a “standard nursery” since the trend for the past 20 years has been “rooming in” and the only time healthy newborns are in the nursery is when mom needs some rest. Most babies in the US start off breastfed, so other than when an occasional bottlefeeding mom sends her baby to the “holding nursery” for a break, there aren’t many feedings or diaper changes to be done. NICU’s (newborn/neonatal intensive care units) don’t hire CNA’s since the training a CNA receives is geared towards long-term adult care.

What you may look into is becoming a Patient Care Tech in an OB unit. However, one of the job descriptions of a Patient Care or Nursing Tech is drawing blood on the mom and also doing a metabolic screen (and possibly other labs) on newborns and that involves a heelstick. Also, the Patient Care Techs on my unit also assist with circumcisions (setting up and comforting baby during the procedure) and also act as a 2nd circulator during C-sections and Tubal ligations, so there is quite a bit of responsibility with that paid position.

Some hospitals have volunteers that help and hold babies in the NICU, but as far as a paid position….you are going to need more training than a CNA since you will have quite a bit more responsibility than a CNA does. Many facilities will offer their own “on the job training” for being a patient care tech/nursing tech if they feel you are the right candidate for the job.

Most of our Patient Care Techs were trained as Medical Assistants or EMT’s, but we have hired some techs that just really wanted a part time job in OB so they could help with the family income and still be home with their baby/children most of the time.
