How to become a nurse with a Bachelor degree in Sociology?

Question by shelly39280: How to become a nurse with a Bachelor degree in Sociology?
I’m thinking about becoming a nurse (RN), but was wondering what kind of education is needed? I have a Bachelor in Sociology. I’m not sure what area specifically I’d like to work in but somewhere along the lines of the ER or in the pediatrics department of the hospital. Does my Sociology degree give me a step up or do I have to start all over and get a BA in nursing?

Sorry, but you need that BS in nursing to become an official nurse. There are some nursing programs out there, like CNA (certified nursing assistant), etc. But yeah… go back to school. I’m sure that most of the requirements for your sociology degree would satisfy the nursing degree, so you’re probably looking at an additional 2 years of schooling. CNA certificates take usually less than 6 mos.

I’m working on my BSN(bachelor of science in nursing), and some of the prerequisite classes i took were either directly related to sociology or was a branch of sociology. So you probably have some classes out of the way. I imagine you will need about a year to finish up your pre-reqs before you can apply for a program. Then once you get out of school you can request to work in a certain area or field and get specific training. Good Luck!

Do a search for accelerated BSN programs in and around your area. These programs transfer in all of your previous coursework (plus any prerequistes you need to take) and put you through nursing courses/clinical experiences that provide you with the needed credentials to sit for the NCLEX.

Be sure that you have the following classes and take them at a local community college if you dont:
General Biology with lab (2 semesters)
Anatomy & Physiology with lab (2 semesters)
    A Statistics course
    General Psychology
    Developmental Psychology (across the lifespan)
    Chemistry with lab (1-2 semesters)
Taking this route will prevent you from starting all over again and will utilize the credentials that you have.

    Good Luck

You don’t need a bachelors degree to become a nurse. There are two year programs at community colleges.

Nursing education typically ranges from a 12-15 month program for the LPN to 2-4 year programs for RNs who earn either an Associates degree or Bachelors degree in nursing. RNs can continue their education and earn Masters degrees and even a PhD in nursing.

If I were you, I would find a program that offers a MSN degree from your Sociology degree. That way you’ll get your Masters as well as being a nurse. With a Masters in nursing, you can become a nurse practitioner which opens many more career opportunities. The pay as a RNP is also much more than an RN, and more importantly, they are changing the requirements for a nurse practitioner. In 2015, it will be required to have a PhD to be a nurse practitioner.

    Good luck!
